We had a very fun and informative tech session at Mercedes-Benz of San Antonio for our February event. 18 club members attended. We were welcomed by Mark Woods, the new owner of the dealership. Mark is also the proud owner of the 1956 Mercedes-Benz Gullwing that is on display in the showroom. We were also greeted by our friend and host for the day Wayne Burchard, the shop Forman. After brief introductions with other staff members, Wayne escorted us through the showroom and on to the very clean, climate controlled service area. While we enjoyed coffee and refreshments, Wayne gave us an overview of the service department and talked about the special benefits that dealer maintenance provides. And the fact that our club membership offers us a 20% discount on parts and labor, it makes good sense to have our cars serviced there. If you compare some of the independent service centers pricing, you may find that the Benz dealer is very competitive… and also offers you the peace of mind that the job is done right and guaranteed.

For fun, we took a trivia test for our knowledge of the Mercedes brand. I love my Mercedes cars, but I got only 10 out of 20 questions correct. One of the trivia questions asked was in what old movie did Mercedes-Benz make its first film debut. It turns out it was an old drive in type movie from 1958 called ‘The Screaming Skull’. I love old movies – especially old Sci Fi movies. I checked out my collection of DVD’s and I found that I had a boxed set of old Drive In ‘B’ movies and the ‘Screaming Skull’ was in that collection. So Martin and I watched it over the weekend. It is a good hokey ‘B’ movie and it was pretty good, considering the poor sound quality. And the plus was that there were several scenes with the 1958 Gullwing.

After the trivia quiz, Wayne raffled off several prizes to the members. Then we talked about Mercedes-Benz parts and why they are of better quality than parts you can buy for a cheaper price. And I have found this to be true. Many times you think you are getting a good price for an off brand part, when actually with our 20% discount, you aren’t saving anything at all, or very little at best.

It was a great day, and a lot of information for us all. We give our thanks to Mark Woods, Wayne Burchard and the staff at Mercedes-Benz of San Antonio for their gracious hospitality. We look forward to our next visit – in March for Coffee and Classics.
